He is a Professor in Surgery and the Head of the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Colombo. He is certified as a specialist in general surgery in Sri Lanka and the UK.

Professor Deepaka has a strong background in General Surgery and has been a Professor in the Surgical Unit for over 20 years.

He has extensive knowledge and experience in:

• Open laparascopic surgery of elective benign and malignant tumors.
• Oesophagoduodenoscopy, endoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
• Laparoscopic surgery of general surgical emergencies.

With a strong focus on evidence-based practice, his primary objective is to deliver state-of-the-art minimally invasive care for the benefit of all his patients, using modern techniques and therapy.

Breakthrough procedures and achievements:

• Winner of the investigator’s award at the Annual Academic Sessions of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka in 1993.
• Consultant Surgeon, University Surgical Unit, Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila.
• Awarded the Milroy Paul Gold Medal for Clinical Surgery.
• WHO Fellow in Medical Education at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi 2001.
