1. How important is the nursing industry in Sri Lanka?
In any country, healthcare is a public priority. While the industry keeps on growing with new technology and practices revolutionising healthcare, the demand for nurses only increases.
It is no different in Sri Lanka. Here, nurses advocate for health advancement, educate the public on the prevention of illness and injury, provide care and assistance to patients, and participate in rehabilitation programmes to provide mental health support. So, the demand for individuals in the nursing industry is much higher now than it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, to be a nurse has become challenging recently. It requires a good mental health, a capacity for quick decision making, determination, dedication, and good interpersonal communication skills. Nowadays, where young individuals have different professional opportunities laid out for them, there is a scarcity of people taking up a career in the healthcare sector let alone nursing industry no matter how important it is.
According to a report published by the NSBM Green University, the total population of registered nurses in Sri Lanka up until 2021 is approximately 40,000. The reasons for this scarcity are identified as:
● Individuals are not being aware of the real particulars of nursing and often stereotyping the career negatively.
● Lack of professional empowerment and professional image.
● General belief that the career opportunities in nursing are for females.
2. What does it takes to become a registered nurse in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka offers flexible opportunities in nursing for young individuals depending on their professional and academic qualifications.
● A/L qualifications
Individuals who have passed in their three main subjects in science stream in GCE Advanced Level Examinations are eligible to apply for the nursing course offered by the Government Nursing Schools and registered Private Nursing Schools. Moreover, they should have passed the GCE Ordinary Level examination in no more than 2 attempts including credit passes in Sinhala or Tamil language, Mathematics, English, and Science.
After a comprehensive training process that ranges 3-4 years, the individuals have the opportunity to become a registered nurse at a hospital.
● NVQ Level 3
National Vocational Qualifications offer course programmes that are equivalent to professional training that can be provided as a qualification when entering the healthcare industry.
● Graduate level qualifications
Graduate level programmes are offered by both government and private universities to individuals who have passed their Advanced Level Examination. The courses are structured to give the students a broader insight to the industry with practicals at hospitals. Individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in one of the various fields of nursing can easily apply for healthcare job opportunities within the government and private sectors in Sri Lanka or even abroad.
● Diploma level qualifications
Diploma level qualifications allow students to find many career paths related to healthcare industry. Just as in degree level qualifications, the diploma course provides the basic knowledge that could help students to find job roles as caretakers, attendants, and nurses.
● Certificate level qualifications
Certificate level qualifications allow students to find jobs related to the nursing industry. The certificate level courses are carefully curated courses that run through 6-12 months and ensure to introduce the field of healthcare to the individuals.
