1. How important is the nursing industry in Sri Lanka?

2. What does it takes to become a registered nurse in Sri Lanka?

● A/L qualifications
Individuals who have passed in their three main subjects in science stream in GCE Advanced Level Examinations are eligible to apply for the nursing course offered by the Government Nursing Schools and registered Private Nursing Schools. Moreover, they should have passed the GCE Ordinary Level examination in no more than 2 attempts including credit passes in Sinhala or Tamil language, Mathematics, English, and Science.
After a comprehensive training process that ranges 3-4 years, the individuals have the opportunity to become a registered nurse at a hospital.
● NVQ Level 3
National Vocational Qualifications offer course programmes that are equivalent to professional training that can be provided as a qualification when entering the healthcare industry.
● Graduate level qualifications
Graduate level programmes are offered by both government and private universities to individuals who have passed their Advanced Level Examination. The courses are structured to give the students a broader insight to the industry with practicals at hospitals. Individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in one of the various fields of nursing can easily apply for healthcare job opportunities within the government and private sectors in Sri Lanka or even abroad.
● Diploma level qualifications
Diploma level qualifications allow students to find many career paths related to healthcare industry. Just as in degree level qualifications, the diploma course provides the basic knowledge that could help students to find job roles as caretakers, attendants, and nurses.
● Certificate level qualifications
